FPSO Mooring System
Upon cessation of production, all infrastructure associated with the Athena Field, which was located in the Outer Moray Firth, was scheduled for decommissioning.

Project Summary
This included the FPSO’s mooring system, a 14cm (5.5in) diameter wire rope encased in a plastic carcass and large diameter anchor chain with a combined weight of 1,800Te.
Our team of decommissioning experts undertook the work, with the initial phase of operations being carried out at Global Energy’s base at Nigg Energy Park in Tain. The mooring system was received onshore from a spooling system onboard a vessel and mechanically cut into road transportable lengths on the quayside using a cold-cutting cleaver shear fitted to a material handler. The cut lengths were then transported the short distance to our licensed Evanton waste metal treatment facility for final processing and recycling. Each length was stripped of its plastic carcass before both the metal and plastic elements were recycled separately, ensuring a recycling rate of 100%.
The anchor chains were cut into single links and utilised as ballast weights for the aquaculture sector.
