Loch Duart Aquaculture

Fish Farm Pens

Farming different species of fish has a long history in the sea lochs off Scotland’s north-west coast. Challenging sea and weather conditions mean there is a need to regularly upgrade and replace the rearing pen infrastructure.

Project Summary

Following the completion of a pen upgrade project at two different sites, we undertook the onshore dismantling, processing and recycling of the redundant pens. These consisted of two large rectangular steel structures, each comprising four individual pens which were intersected and surrounded by galvanised steel walkways.

Two separate locations were selected for landing the 350Te cages due to their accessibility and proximity to the pens’ original offshore locations. The first set of pens were towed to a private beach at Aultbea, which, with restricted access to members of the public, provided a safe area for dismantling work to take place. Located further south, the second set were floated to Kishorn Port for dismantling.

At both sites, mobile cleaver shears were used to deconstruct the structures into road transportable sections. These were then transferred to our fully licensed Evanton waste metal treatment facility for further processing to ESSS standard, before being exported to European steel mills for recycling into new steel products, delivering significant environmental benefits.

We are the largest metal recycler and exporter of processed metal in North and North-East Scotland and an experienced member of the decommissioning supply chain. With current strategically located licensed facilities in Aberdeen, Shetland, Evanton and Montrose, and the addition of our new quayside facility in Dundee opening in 2020 bringing our combined annual licensed tonnage to 360,000 tonnes, we are your decommissioning partner of choice.
